Sharh-us-Sunnah – Explanation of the Creed

This classic work consists of 170 points on different aspects of the Muslim creed, with quotes from the the Qur.aan, the Sunnah, the Companions and later scholars.  The author was an imaam who stood firm in defending this creed in the face of  enmity and opposition from the people of innovation, may Allaah have mercy on him.

14 Allaah is The First and The Last; His Ascent, His Knowledge; No one says ‘Why?’ about His Attributes
15 The Qur.aan is the Speech of Allaah
16 Seeing Allaah on the Day of Resurrection
17 The Balance upon which Good and Evil will be Weighed; The Punishment of the Grave, Munkar and Nakeer
18 The Hawd (Pool) and the Intercession on the Day of Resurrection
19 The Bridge over Hell, Belief in the Prophets and Angels
20 Paradise and the Fire are True and Real, both are Already Created
21 Al-Maseehud-Dajjaal; The Descent of ‘Eesaa  `alayhissalaam; the Defintion of Eemaan
22 The Best of This Ummah after its Prophet is  Aboo Bakr then ‘Umar then Uthmaan
23 We Mention the Virtues of the Companions and Remain Silent about their Mistakes
24 To Hear and Obey the Rulers
25 Hajj and Jihaad are to be Carried out under the Leadership of the Ruler;  Khilaafah remaining within the Quraysh
26 Whover Rebels against a Muslim Ruler is one of the Khawaarij;  It is Not Permissible to Fight the Ruler nor to Rebel against him
27 The Permissibility of Fighting Khawaarij who Attack the Muslims; No Obedience to a Human in Disobedience to Allaah; We do not Bear Witness that any Muslim is in Paradise or in Hell; A Servant may Repent from Any Sin
28 Stoning is True and Correct; Wiping over the Leather Socks is the Sunnah
29 Shortening the Prayer when Travelling is the Sunnah; Fasting when Travelling; Praying in Broad Trousers
30 Hypocrisy is to Display Islaam whilst Hiding Disbelief
31 The World is the Place of Eemaan and Islaam; Muslims and Believers with regard to Rulings; We do not Bear Witness that any of them are True and Perfect Believers
32 None of the Muslims leave IslaamUnless they Reject an Aayah from the Qur.aan or any Narrations from the Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam
33 Anyone who Explains anything from the Narrations according to his Desires or Rejects them is a Jahmee
34 Whoever Claims to have Seen Allaah is a Disbeliever; Reflecting Deeply about Allaah is an Innovation; All Creatures only Act by Allaah’s Permission; Allaah’s Knowledge
35 There is No Marriage except with a Guardian (Walee); If a Man Divorces his Wife Three Times She is Forbidden for him
36 The Blood of a Muslim may not be Spilt except in Three Cases
37 Everything which Allaah has Decreed to End will End
38 Retribution on the Day of Resurrection between all of Creation; Making Actions Purely and Sincerely for Allaah; Being Pleased with the Decree of Allaah
39 Having Patience with the Judgement of Allaah; Takbeers of the Funeral Prayer
40 The (Dead) People of the Well Heard the Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam on the Day of Badr; Reward for the Ill; Reward for the Martyr; Children Feel Pain
41 No-one will Enter Paradise except by the Mercy of Allaah, Allaah is not Unjust, He is not to be Questioned about what He Does
42 If you Hear a Man Rejecting any of the Narrations of Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam then Doubt his Islaam;  The Qur.aan Needs the Sunnah more than the Sunnah needs the Qur.aan
43 (Unwarranted) Speech, Argumentation and Disputation about Pre-decree is Forbidden
44 Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was Taken by Night through the Heavens, Came to the Throne and Spoke to Allaah;  The Souls of the Martyrs, the Believers and the Disbelievers
45 The Deceased is Made to Sit Up in his Grave and is Questioned about Faith; Allaah Spoke to Moosaa;  Evil and Good Occur by the Pre-Decree of Allaah
46 The Intellect;  Allaah has Given Excellence to some Servants over Others in the Religion and Worldly Affairs and has Done so Justly
47 It is Not Permissible to Hide Sincere Advice from any of the Muslims in Matters of the Religion; Allaah Hears, Sees and Knows, His Two Hands are Outstretched
48 Tidings given when one Dies; Seeing Allaah; Kalaam and its People have caused Heresy, Disbelief, Doubts, Innovations, Misguidance and Confusion about the Religion; Allaah will Punish the Creation In the Fire
49 The Obligatory Prayers are Five; Zakaah is to be Paid upon …
50 The Testification that None has the Right to be Worshipped Except Allaah and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger; There is Nothing to Contradict what Allaah Says; To have Faith in All of the Revealed Laws
51 Buying and Selling in accordance with the Book and the Sunnah is Lawful; A Servant does Not Know in what State he will Die; A Man should not Give up Hope at the Point of Death
52 Allaah showed His Prophet sallAllaahu alaihi wa sallam what was going to Occur to his Ummah; The Ummah will Split into Seventy-Three Sects, All of  them in the Fire except One
53 Splitting and Innovations came about after the Killing of `Uthmaan
54 The Sunnah became a Stranger; Temporary Marriage of Covenience and Marrying a Woman to Make her Lawful for her Previous Husband are Forbidden
55 The Excellence of Banoo Haashim
56 The Scholars Continued Refuting the Jahmiyyah to the Time of the Khilaafah of Banul-`Abbaas
57 Whoever Says his Recital of the Qur.aan is Created is an Innovator; The Ruin of the Jahmiyyah was that they Pondered about the Lord, introducing ‘Why?’ and ‘How?’
58 Some of the Scholars Declared the Jahmee to be a Disbeliever
59 Knowledge of the Sunnah and Jamaa’ah was Wiped Away by the Jahmiyyah; There has Never been any Heresy except from the Ignorant Rabble who Follow Anyone who Calls out Wildly
60 There will not Cease to be a Group of People of the Truth and the Sunnah
61 The Scholar is the One who Follows the Book and the Sunnah;  Whoever Speaks about the Religion without Proof has Overstepped the Limits; The Sunnah is what the Messenger sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam laid down, the Jamaa’ah is what the Companions united upon
62 The Saved Sect, “That which I and my companions are upon”;  Beware of Extremism
63 The Murder of `Uthmaan, There is no Permit for Anyone to do Anything which the Companions were not upon;  Whoever Clings to the Sunnah should be Followed, Helped and Protected
64 The Roots of Bid`ah are Four, from these Seventy Two Innovations Branch off…All of them are Misguided
65 If the People Desisted from Newly Introduced Matters, There Would Not be any Innovation;  A Believer Becoming a Disbeliever
66 Fear Allaah and Take to the Affair as it Originally WasFear Allaah and Take to the Affair as it Originally Was
67 Whoever Contradicts and Rejects Anything from the Sunnah has Rejected All of the Sunnah
68 When Discord (Fighting between the Muslims) Occurs do not Go Out in it, Do Not Fight in it, Do Not Take Part in it, do not Take Sides in it, Nor Incline Towards Either Side
69 Look into the Stars Just Enough to Know the Times of the Prayer, Other than that Leads to Apostacy;  Beware of Looking into Rhetorical Theology;  Stick to the Narrations and People of Narrations
70 Allaah has not been Worshipped with the Like of Fear;  Beware of Sitting with those who Call to Passion and Love and Seclude themselves with Women (the Soofees)
71 Allaah has called all of the creation to worship Him Alone. He favours whom He wishes with Islaam.
72 Witholding about the wars which took place between the Companions.
73 The wealth of a Muslim is not permissible to take except for that which he gives willingly …; And means of earning whose correctness is clear to you are permissible, except for that whose corruptness becomes apparent …
74 And the 5 daily prayers are permissible behind anyone except a Jahmee … ; And to have eemaan that Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, may Allaah have mercy upon both of them, are within the apartment of ‘Aaishah radiyAllaahu’anhaa, along with Allaah’s Messenger sallAllaahu’alaihiwasallam …
75 Ordering good and forbidding the evil is an obligation…
76 Greetings of salaam are to be given to all of Allaah’s worshippers; Whoever abandons the Jumu’ah or congregational prayer … ;
77 Whoever prays behind an Imaam and does not follow him, there is no prayer for him; Ordering the good and forbidding the evil … ; The blameless Muslim … ; Everything (some) worshippers claim as hidden knowledge (‘ilm-ul-baatin) …
78 A woman who gives herself in marriage to a man … ; If you see a man criticising the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah sAllaahu’alaihiwasallam
